The Vaquita Porpoise today is one of the most threatened animals in the world and could be the next to go extinct.
On November 23, the New York Times reported in an article, written by biodiversity reporter Catrin Einhorn, that there are fewer than ten of these tender porpoises whose main cause of death is accidents caused by gillnets used to fishing activity.
The Vaquita Porpoise is the smallest of the cetaceans and the only marine mammal native to Mexico, endemic to the Upper Gulf of California, that is, it is a proudly Mexican species and unfortunately we are getting closer to losing it if we don’t do something about it.
Currently there is no successfully established agreement between the fishing community and animal protection organizations, there are constantly clashes between activists and fishermen, but the cause is not lost yet we have an opportunity so that together we can save one of the most important and beautiful species that inhabit the Earth.
